June 2020 - Summer Term 2 - Summer

In line with our new half termly topic ‘Summer Time’, here are some ideas for my areas of planning in Owls class. These are based on ‘Over in the Meadow’, an animated song by Barefoot Books available on YouTube:



Sensory Story:

Take time to explore as many of these items as you can. By using a slow pace, you can experience what each item looks, sounds, feels, smells and (where appropriate) tastes like. You can try using different parts of the body to explore the items too, such as using your feet as well as your hands. As well as searching for accompanying You Tube clips to experience the sounds that these animal make.

All the while, looking for reactions from your child; do they anticipate an item returning for more? Do they request ‘more’? Do they have the same response every time to an item? Do they favour one item over another? Do they make a choice between two? Most importantly, have fun together and share the experience

  • Toad: bumpy and/or slimy items such as jelly, hair gel or bubble wrap.
  • Sheep: fleecy and/or woolly items such as cotton wool, fleece blankets, knitted jumpers
  • Robin: feathered items such as a feathered duster and/or items replicating a tree such as bark, leaves
  • Muskrat: furry items and/or those replicating reeds such as long grass, washed sticks from a reed diffuser, stems of real or artificial plants.
  • Bees: honey, flowers, fuzzy items and/or stripy items such as bed socks
  • Crow: sticks and twigs and/or item that snap like them such a Twiglets, Matchstick chocolates
  • Mouse: squeaky toys and/or grass/straw to sprinkle, scatter, ball and smooth
  • Lizard: scaly/leather items such as a bag, belt, shoe and/or washed moss
  • Fish: splashing in water, tasting/smelling fish.
  • Spider: hairy or lacy items such as pipe cleaners, a ball of back combed wool or yarn or old pieces of lace.



  • Making ‘edible sand’ by crushing up/blending biscuits or wafers until it’s like a powder. Practice reaching into, grasping onto, sprinkling and scooping together. Can you hide an item in the sand for your child to help find?
  • Make a handprint spider. Can you child open their hand as much as possible with the help of a hand massage before printing?
  • Cut out a paper cobweb for your child you help decorate. Can they move their hands amongst paint/glitter to create marks on the paper cobweb?
  • Make shredded wheat and chocolate bird nest buns together. Can your child grasp the spoon to help stir the mixture with you?
  • Water play: can you child splash their hands or feet in water? Do they notice a change when their hands/feet become submerged in water?



‘Summer Time’ TAC PAC


  • ‘Follow the Sun’ by Xavier Rudd

Sun cream: smell then massage into hands, arms, legs, feet. Warm up the body and develop awareness of each part.

  • ‘Summer time’ by Jazzy Jeff.  

Fan: use a hand held, battery, electric or paper fan. Fan different areas of the body but not directly in face.

  • ‘Heartbeats’ by José González.

Soft/beach ball: Hold together and squash, throw, roll, bounce.

  • ‘Summer time’ by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong

Heat packs/hot water bottles: Wrap in a towel and let heat be absorbed. *Not directly against skin*

  • ‘Good vibrations’ by Beach Boys

Either a toy that vibrates or can be shaken such as a rice filled bottle.

  • ‘At the River’ By Groove Armada

Bubbles: to calm and relax or dim the lights and be still.

Hello little Owls, hope you are all taking care and looking after yourselves.

I have put together a few suggestions of some sensory activities that you might like to do with your family whilst you are at home:

  • Search ‘Sensory Spectacle’ on Facebook to make shakers with materials in your home. Remember to have fun exploring each material before making a wonderful new instrument! 
  • Search ‘Soundabout’ on Facebook to join in with a music therapy session using your new instrument
  • Create a Sensology session- focus on each sense one by one and (if appropriate) explore something that you can see/smell/touch/taste as well as listening to the instruments you made or other things you can hear.
  • Give your child a ‘story massage’- focus on different parts of the body using the Massage Strokes detailed below.
  • Tell a ‘sensory story’ using to help. You can find 7 FREE multi sensory stories under ‘DIY books’. It does asks you to register and it will then provide a password to view them. ’The Secret Ingredient’, ‘ Don’t Say Egg’, ‘Moving Day’ and ‘A Snowy Day’ uses resources you will likely have at home already.
