Call & Response

Call and Response is a communication approach woven through the Roots Curriculum and links to Intensive Interaction and many aspects of Phase 1 phonics. It is a sequence of turn taking, usually in the form of a song, where both the ‘call’ and ‘response’ are equally as important as each other.

The teacher sings the ‘call’ then the other participants repeat the final keyword as their ‘response’.  As the ‘response’ is much shorter and louder that the ‘call’, it aims to encourage pupils to participate at the most motivating stage of the song. The same phrase is repeated throughout the song on a daily basis to encourage pupils to anticipate the ‘response’ and participate at their own level whether this be using gestures, vocalisations or with the support of AAC.
